Dear Mill Creek Parents/Guardians:

A warm welcome to the 2020-21 school year!  For sure, this will be a year like no other.  We know that this year will require a great deal of flexibility and adaptability on everyone’s part.  Please, let’s be patient with each other as we work through new and unprecedented terrain.

School officially begins on Tuesday, September 8.  The school day begins at 9:20 AM and ends at 3:45 PM.  Unlike in the Spring, we are not utilizing any outside programs.  Your child’s teacher will be providing instruction and will let you know what the daily schedule will look like.  She/he will contact you via email on August 31 to introduce themselves.  Your child will receive daily instruction in all of the major content areas in addition to our special areas (art, music, PE, library).  The following is a breakdown of time allotments per content area:

• Language Arts 90 minutes

• Math 90 minutes

• Social Studies 45 minutes

• Science 45 minutes

• Special Area 30 minutes

Be assured, your child is not expected to sit in front of the computer all day.  The teachers will be providing direct instruction as well as small group and individual break-out sessions.  In addition, teachers will provide activities for students to work on either independently or in small groups.  Teachers will also be providing instruction on how to use the SeeSaw learning platform.  We will continue to use Morning Meeting as part of our Responsive Classroom program.

The home/school partnership has always been an important component of a child’s success.  This is so now more than ever.  We need your help in providing what your child needs for successful learning at home.  Please help us as best you can by

• Establishing a daily routine or schedule

• Finding a quiet space for school work

• Providing an organized desk or work space

• Providing adult supervision

• Having someone available for help when your child needs it and helping your child learn to ask for help as well

While we understand that full-time online learning is different and will present some challenges, it also provides an opportunity for growth and learning with important life skills.   Learning how to learn, self-regulate, self-advocate, set goals, and reflect on progress toward those goals are components of virtual learning that we will be working on with your children.

There is a Japanese proverb that says, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight.”  We are all facing challenges where we feel like we are falling down.  We have to keep standing up.  We will work together to make this school year as good as it can possibly be for our children.
