Information about the Mill Creek Elementary School

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program:

What is the ESL Program?

The purpose of the ESL Program is to provide instruction and support for students whose primary language is a language other than English. The goal of the program is to increase the students' English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students are found eligible for ESL instruction through a process required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. All parents/guardians complete a Home Language Survey during new student registration. Based on the responses on the survey, a child may be given an assessment (W-APT or WIDA Screener) to determine the child's level of English language proficiency. If the student's assessment results show that he/she requires additional help with English, the student receives specialized ESL instruction during the school day. Students in grades Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd at Mill Creek Elementary school are pulled from their regular classes during the day to receive ESL instruction. The amount of instructional time is based on the individual needs of each student. ESL students do not miss core classroom instruction whiled pulled from their classrooms for ESL instruction.

Who provides ESL instruction?

Mrs. Patricia Dougherty and Mrs. Kathryn Jackson are the ESL teachers at Mill Creek Elementary School. Mrs. Dougherty provides instruction for students in Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. Mrs. Jackson provides instruction for students in grades 3, 4, and 5.

How do students exit the ESL Program?

All ESL students are required to take the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs test every year in January/February to determine their progress with English language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Parents/guardians will receive their child’s WIDA ACCESS scores every year in both English and the home language, when available. Students who meet all of the criteria to exit the ESL Program based on the Pennsylvania Department of Education reclassification, will exit the ESL Program. Parents are notified in writing if their child will be exiting the ESL program. Exited students will be monitored by the ESL teachers for a period of two years in order to be certain the students are progressing as expected.
